The young man considered Cale slyly.
‘Let me guess, you like a nice romance – love betrayed, a foundling girl, a
heartless villain, a tearful reunion and a happy end.’
‘I’m ashamed to be so obvious. You don’t like a happy end?’
‘I do in my life – I want endless sweetness and joy and never to
be crossed in anything. But in my books I like misery and pain and
sorrow and a miserable death for hero and villain alike – no marriages,
and lots of funerals and plenty of despair. That’s me. That
kind of thing makes me feel deep.’
